Great Reno Balloon Race 2017

SEPTEMBER 8-10, 2017

The mission of the Great Reno Balloon Race is to provide a premier, safe, family-oriented/tourist-attractive, visually dramatic event that celebrates the joy of flight while remaining free to the public.

The Great Reno Balloon Race is the largest free hot-air ballooning event in the world. During three days in early September, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about. From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight with up to 100 balloons each year. The idea was to create an event that would keep visitors in town the weekend between the State Fair and the Reno Air Races and 35 years later, it is known as a world-renowned, and locally, a beloved community tradition.

Taking place just a few miles north of downtown Reno, the event enchants both young and old with its vibrant colors and inspiring music. The Balloon Race has won many awards over the years including ‘Best Special Event in Reno’ and ‘Best Special Event in Northern Nevada.’ With an average of 120,000 spectators attending the event each year, the number of lives touched by the beautiful spectacle continues to rise just like the balloons themselves.

Stand-Out Moments in GRBR History:

1998: Addition of the Glow Show, which was added to offer spectators an attraction as they wait for Dawn Patrol on Saturday and Sunday.  The Glow Show begins at 5 a.m.
1999: Washoe County school children get involved with the event in the E.L. Cord Tissue Paper Balloon Launch. This event gives school children a chance to positively interact with their community. One of the major goals of this project is to make sure that no funding comes out of the pocket of schools or teachers.
-The thrill of winning big goes airborne as the Biggest Little City in the World hosts the biggest card game, Balloon Blackjack.
2001: The Great Reno Balloon Race celebrated its 20th Anniversary with the Birthday Cake balloon.
2002: ABC’s Good Morning America appeared at The Great Reno Balloon Race for live cut-ins of Dawn Patrol during their Friday morning show.
2003: The Great Reno Balloon Race hit record attendance with over 140,000 spectators attending the three-day event. Also, Serena’s Song, the only wheelchair accessible balloon in the United States, offered free tethered rides for wheelchair usage and people with disabilities throughout the weekend.
2007: CNN attended the event and The Great Reno Balloon Race also got coverage in worldwide media including Prestige Hong KongEvery Day with Rachel Ray and The History Channel Magazine. National Championship Air Race becomes a sponsor and performs a T-6 formation fly over during the singing of the National Anthem.
2008: The Great Reno Balloon Race hosted the World’s Largest Pajama Party which encouraged spectators to attend in pajamas with their best (and worst) bed-head.
2009:Rolling Pilot,” Michael Glen, the first paraplegic hot-air balloon pilot in the world, flew in the Balloon Race.
-For the first time, Brian Jones flew a hot-air replica of his helium balloon, the Orbiter 3 at the Balloon Race. The Orbiter 3 was the first balloon to fly around the world nonstop.
2011: The Darth Vader balloon made his first appearance to the event. The balloon gave way to Star Wars themed activities and contests and also brought in an entourage of Storm Troopers and included Darth himself!
2012: GRBR introduced the Cloud 9 VIP Club! For the first time spectators could have a front-row seat to the event with a heated tent, catered breakfast and much more!
2013: This marks the introduction of the Friday Super Glow Show. See upwards of 25 balloons twinkling and glowing to music across the field

ABOUT TOWN DEB – Traveling Like a Celebrity

Rarely is traveling to your destination part of the fun anymore. Gone are the days when people referred to travel as “luxurious” or “exciting”. Long lines, traffic, lost bags, flight delays…all of a sudden your fun vacation is more aggravating than relaxing. Unless, that is, you’re lucky enough to be a passenger aboard the Celebrity Reflection® cruise ship.

After enjoying the amazing city of Miami with my cousins Lucy, Jorja, and Celia, we set sail from the Port of Miami on a divine adventure filled with wine, chocolate, amazing company, music, and the beauty of the Caribbean. From start to finish, this trip was the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement.

Along with my cousins, I was lucky to be joined by some of my favorite friends, who happen to specialize in two of my favorite things: wine and chocolate. Shari Fitzpatrick (of Berried in Chocolate) provided the sweet, while Nello Oliver (of Nello Oliver Winery) and John Miller (of MV Miller Winery) provided the savory.

To round up the experience, here are the About Town Deb’s top takeaways from my Celebrity Reflection® cruise. For more information on Celebrity Cruises, visit their website at celebritycruises.com.

Prepare to be Pampered

Everyone wants to feel like royalty on vacation, as though money is no object and the carbs don’t count. When you step foot on a Celebrity cruise ship, you will instantly feel like you are their top priority. The staff is eager to make your stay everything you dreamed it would be and more. Personal cabin attendants cater to your wants and needs, and no detail is left to chance. Your stateroom will be made up and turned down for you daily, you can kick back and watch TV, and enjoy 24-hour room service. Don’t miss the opportunity to spend some time on the deck. Watch the shore get smaller and the waves get bigger as you sail across the sea towards paradise. And don’t bother getting up to refill your drink; someone will be standing by to assist you.  You can be sure that the Celebrity staff will work hard to make your experience second to none.

Entertainment for Everyone

Regardless of your age or musical preferences, you will find something to dance to on this ship! Music is everywhere, and with 18 show options, you have no choice but to be entertained. Be sure to see Rock City, a mix  of classic and modern rock in a stadium concert venue. I went twice in  one night and had a blast at both shows!

If music isn’t what you’re looking for, you can take in IMagic— top notch illusions that will leave you with more questions than answers— or the adult only, fashion forward, fairytale show, Elyria .

No matter what you choose, you won’t believe you can find such amazing entertainment on the sea.

Relax and Reset

For all of the dancing, eating, and socializing, there are just as many opportunities to unwind and take in the moment. Lay on the deck with  a book, eat lunch with just the sound of the waves against the ship, or nap in sunshine. Even the busiest body on the ship will appreciate the chance to take in the beauty of the ocean. You can also visit the beautiful spa for a little “you time” and no one would blame you! So don’t feel bad about unplugging for a while and taking in the moment.

Lucy, Jorja, Celia, and I can’t wait for our next cruise! And thanks to the talents of our amazing travel agent, Angie Klinke with Welcome Aboard Travel—always an About Town Deb top pick—we know it will be the most exciting trip yet.

So, join us, along with Leslie McCarroll my partner with Bliss Babe Magazine, our Host and Chocolatier Shari Fitzpatrick, Mike & Melissa Owen of Crystal basin Cellars as we all enjoy wines from both Crystal Basin Cellars and Miraflores Winery, on our next at-sea adventure as we enjoy wine, chocolates, and great company, and explore new adventures together.

Hot August Nights

During an evening night on August 1, 1986, the Reno-Sparks Convention Center was bursting at the seams with hundreds of revelers who were partying, cheering and pushing to be let in to a first-time event of a magnitude yet to be realized. Inside, 10,000 spectators were massed together in anticipation of seeing and hearing a live event of the Righteous Brothers, Wolfman Jack, and Jan & Dean!  It was that night when nostalgia was unleashed among an audience who excitedly relived their childhood years of the 50’s and 60’s- a time of innocence, prosperity, cars and the birth of Rock and Roll. The weather was HOT, the month of AUGUST was right, therefore, HOT AUGUST NIGHTS was born!

The aim of Hot August Nights was to fill a void in tourism in Reno during the month of August and to raise money for local charities. The first concert was held in the Convention Center parking lot where most hadn’t danced to “that” music, to a live band, under the stars, since high school. The memories flooded back and so did the desire for more!  The first year of Hot August Nights was more of a nostalgia event than a car event. But it was the car parade that was the highlight of the Event for the participants and the crowds who thronged Virginia Street. The car owners were thrilled to show off their cars. They’d never had so many people “oohing and aahing” over their “works of art”. It was a proud moment for classic car owners.

WINEderlust will take place on the South Fork of the American River at Henningsen Lotus Park on Saturday, August 26, 2017 from 2:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wine adventurers, craft beer buffs, exploration enthusiasts, and everyone in between are welcome to join the festivities that include food, beverage, and artist vendors along with mocktails and live music from co-headliners MerryGold, Late for Dinner, and Achilles Wheel.

Adult Ticket 21+ includes commemorative glass and wine tasting tickets.
