Great wines start in the vineyard, and our vineyard is at 1,300 feet in elevation on the western side of the Sierra Nevada. It was in these Northern California foothills, specifically in El Dorado County, that Gold was discovered in 1849. Today, the rich soils of the area offer a ‘liquid form of gold’ in the Gold Medal-winning wines produced just 135 miles from Reno—well within the 225-mile radius that the Reno community values for local selections.

At Nello Olivo Winery, we are fortunate to have found the original location of the historic Bennett Winery, one of the largest wine producers during the Gold Rush days. The old winery building is now a ruin on our property, and a few vines that escaped being torn out during Prohibition climb the oak trees along Deer Creek. These vines turn a brilliant red in the fall, reminding us of the remarkable history and terroir of this land.
